Cables: syndicate suspects

FOUR alleged copper cable thieves, accused of causing damage of about R800 000 since July, were part of a syndicate, the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court heard yesterday. The men, two of them Mozambicans, were applying for bail, which the State was opposing. They were believed to be part of a syndicate of 21 people who were recently arrested. Lindenkosi Wiseman Xulu (34) Anton Chauke (33) Moses Mashaba (30) and Sipho Mchunu (29) were arrested after an Eskom special investigating team with night-vision glasses watched three of the men hide rolls of calble in the grass. Nico Smith, of Combined Private Investigations, said they had cut an 88 kilo-volt cable with a hacksaw eight metres above the ground. — Sapa
